With ANZAC Day fast approaching, here is a collaborative project that kids of all ages and grades can undertake to create a Poppy Remembrance Wreath.
Being an indecisive crafter afraid of commitment, I couldn’t decide on one type of poppy as I embarked on this project. So I decided to try 4 different processes and designs. As I did so, it dawned on me how this would be a great collaborative activity for kids of different age groups, abilities and grades.
To create the base, you need:
Cardboard (I used an old nappy box)
2 bowls of different sizes
Pencil
Scissors
White paint
Trace around the larger bowl.
Place the smaller bowl in the centre and trace around it.
Cut out your wreath and paint white.
For the Toddler Crafter
You will need:
Paper
Red paint
Paintbrush
The idea here was to use the base of an egg carton to print the petals of the poppies. As so often happens, The Toddler had different ideas and chose to smear the paint across the paper with a paintbrush. So I ran with it.
Once the paint had dried, I cut out poppies and used a black marker for the centres.
Simple, effective and Toddler-Approved.
For the Crafter aged 4 -7
You will need:
Red tissue paper circles
Red cupcake liners
Black tissue paper
Glue
My toddler also helped with this style of poppy, but did require some assistance. So these poppies could be created with younger crafters with adult guidance. Otherwise this would be a great independent craft for 4-7 year olds.
Glue the cupcake liner to the red circle.
Scrunch the black tissue paper into small pieces and glue to the centre of the cupcake liner.
For the Crafter Aged 7+
You will need:
Egg cartons
Scissors
Red, black and gold paint
Cut up an egg carton.
You will need to cut around the top to create a poppy shape.
Pinch the carton between your thumb and pointer to shape the petal.
Paint your poppy red. (My Toddler helped at this stage. So younger crafters could definitely have a go at this process too, but will need a hand with the cutting and shaping.)
Add in the centre details with black and gold paint.
For the Crafter with Good Scissor Skills

You will need:
Red, black and green felt
Lids/bowls for tracing
Marker
Scissors
Craft glue
Trace a large circle and a smaller circle onto red felt.
Cut out your circles, a small black centre and a green leaf.
Layer together and secure with craft glue.
Position all your poppies on the base and secure with craft glue.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
How do you observe ANZAC Day?
